Department of Botany

The Department of Botany was started in the year 1965 under the Mahatma Gandhi University. It was elevated to the status of Post Graduate Department in 2014. The department aims to provide skill oriented quality education to students and currently offers B.Sc. Botany programme with Phytochemistry and Pharmacognosy as choice based course and Post Graduate programme in Botany with Biotechnology as the elective course. The sanctioned strength for undergraduate programme is 32 and for postgraduate programme is 10. In addition to the UG and PG laboratories, the Department has a well-equipped Phytochemistry laboratory. The Department is receiving financial support under the Star College Scheme of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.


To become a centre of quality education and research in Botany, providing a platform for academic interactions in plant science.

Extension activities

·  Annual Summer School programme- Manimala for school students.

·  Identification of medicinal plants in the college campus.

·  Science exhibition in Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the college.

·  Participated in post flood Biodiversity survey of Kerala Biodiversity Board.

·  Lay out and establishment of MP Varghese tree park in the college campus.

·  Hands on training in flower arrangement, terrarium and bonsai.


·  Well-equipped laboratory for BSc. Botany students.

·  Well-furnished lab cum classrooms for PG students.

·  Phytochemistry lab with UV- Vis spectroscope, Hot air oven, laminar air flow

    chamber, autoclave, incubator, deep freezer, double distillation unit, microtome,

   soxhlet apparatus, rotary evaporator, cooling centrifuge,vortex machine,

    pH Meter, gel electrophoresis unit and transilluminator.

Upon Completion of B.Sc. Botany Programme, the students will be able to


Identify, differentiate and appraise the diversity and beauty of flora and fauna.


Demonstrate writing, speaking, reading and listening competence in two languages.


Apply concepts of Chemistry and Zoology relevant to plant science.


Acquire proficiency to use biological instruments and apply practical skills in the field.


Apply methodologies and techniques to explore plant and animal life comprehensively.


Integrate the knowledge acquired to preserve natural resources and lead an environmental friendly life.


Develop knowledge about environmental laws and human rights.


Programme Specific Outcome: MSc. Botany


Upon completion of M.Sc. Botany Programme, the students will be able to:


Interpret diversity, origin and evolution of plants on earth, identify different plant groups and conserve biodiversity.


Appraise methodologies, techniques and recent advances in Botany and its allied branches.


Analyze and evaluate experimental data using biological and statistical tools and document the findings.


Explain concepts and skills with multidisciplinary dimensions and get motivated for knowledge creation.


Acquire knowledge for problem solving, research and to pursue life-long learning.


Summarize and disseminate scientific ideas and research findings.


Create environmental consciousness among fellow citizens and work towards sustainable development of the nation and world at large.
