Department of Physics


The department of Physics in M A College, established in June 1959, presently offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Physics. Department also offers an add-on course in ‘Matlab’ software and skill development programme in ‘Robotics and Automation’. During an academic year, it caters to the academic needs of more than 125 students specializing in Physics, around 130 students through complementary (subsidiary) courses and another 25 students through open courses. So far, the department has produced more than 550 M. Sc. graduates and 4 Ph. Ds. Presently there are 6 permanent teaching staff, 2 guest faculties and 6 non-teaching staff in the department. About 67% of teachers are with either Ph. D or MPhil and 65% have secured ranks in University examinations and all are actively involved in research.  Faculty and research scholars have published in excess of 39 research papers in peer reviewed journals during the last 5 years. There are 2 research guides and one full-time research scholar is registered and actively pursuing research activities leading to Ph.D. degree. The areas of research being carried out in the department are Material Science, Thin films, Applications of Magnetic materials, Gas sensing, and Optics. Department maintains a book bank with about 100 books with an online catalogue available for the books. The department has very well equipped UG, PG and research laboratories. The department was identified as a ‘Highly Rated Department’ by UGC under ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ in 2009. DST selected the department for ‘FIST assistance’ along with other science departments of the college in 2011. The department has re- entitled to get UGC P.G. Assistance in the XI – Plan. Also the department has received funding from DBT under the STAR COLLEGE scheme in 2019. The department marked its golden jubilee during the academic year 2009 – 2010.

 

Department regularly organizes national, international seminars/conferences and workshops for the benefit of students and faculty. Many student centered/volunteer activities such as training for making solar lights, LED bulbs, wiring nearby tribal village houses etc. are conducted each year under the leadership of the departmen

  5. To promote the highest ethical principles in scientific research, critical thinking, openness to social, scientific, technological and educational changes, as well as the working autonomy at the institution, both scientific and educational.

To build foundation for excellence and spur development of the institution as a  premier institution by igniting and nurturing enthusiasm, interests and passion, in the study of Physics, as a part of curricula with the objective of  sustainable development  of economy and society as a whole.
