Department of Commerce for Under Graduate

The UGC has sanctioned to start the vocational course B.Com: Tax Procedure and Practice in M. A. College, Kothamangalam from the academic year 1996-97. The course was sanctioned with 5 years financial assistance by the UGC, i.e. 1996-01. Regarding the continuation of the course the UGC stipulation was that the institution should take effort to take over the liability of the recurring expenditure after UGC assistance ceases after 2000-01 through the support of the state government and other sources.

The UGC has extended a financial support of Rs.1, 00,000 per year as recurring grant for 5 years to meet salary of staff and other day to day expenses, and a non-recurring grant of Rs. 2, 00,000 for modernization of the department. Utilizing the recurring grant college conducted the course for the first five years without charging any extra fees from the students. Since 1996 for five years, there was only one batch of students under the department with a total intake of 60 students comprising 30 under conventional scheme and the remaining 30 under UGC Scheme. Forenoon sessions of the course were conducted as a combined batch and afternoon session, separate class for vocational students to take vocational subjects.

They are also giving two months on the job training outside the college in various institutions as a part of the curriculum.
In 2000-01, when the UGC assistance ceased, as per the direction of Hon’ble High Court Government of Kerala permitted the college to continue the course under Self - Financing Scheme. Now the course is conducting under a separate department “Department of B.Com Tax Procedure and Practice” with an intake of 30 students of which 50% is admitting on merit complying the reservation rules prescribed by the government and the remaining 50% by the management. The management has fixed a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying examination for admission of students under the management quota.
In 2009 -2010 Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam changes the Structure of the UG Courses. Annual UG courses are converted into Choice Based Credit & Semester System. (CBCSS).   Then the Course become renamed As Model III B.Com Taxation
